The Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese, the Rev Anthony Zziwa, has strongly condemned the mistreatment of journalists by security officers, warning that violence against the media undermines press freedom and democracy.
Speaking during an Ash Wednesday Mass at St. Noah Church in Kiyinda-Mityana, Bishop Zziwa, who also chairs the Uganda Episcopal Conference, expressed deep concern over the February 26 assault on Top TV reporter Ibrahim Miracle, who was severely beaten by security operatives while covering the nomination of National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi.
“It is disheartening to see those entrusted with maintaining law and order turning against journalists, beating them as though they were criminals,” Bishop Zziwa said.
He emphasized the crucial role of journalists in informing the public and holding leaders accountable, urging security agencies to respect press freedom and uphold professionalism.
“As a nation, we must respect the dignity of every individual, including journalists. Violence should never be the answer,” he added.
The bishop’s remarks come amid growing reports of media harassment, with journalists facing intimidation, arrests, and physical attacks while covering events across the country. He called on authorities to ensure justice and protect journalists from brutality, stressing that a free and independent press is essential for a just society.
