The legal fight for Dr. Kizza Besigye’s release took a dramatic turn when Judge Singizi Douglas ordered that the opposition leader be returned to prison due to his deteriorating health, a decision that has fueled nationwide protests and heightened political tensions.

During a court session, Judge Singizi expressed concern over Besigye’s frail condition, stating that he could not proceed with a sick prisoner. “This is an administrative order. If a prisoner is sick, I can’t continue with him. He might faint,” the judge ruled before briefly adjourning the session.

Besigye, who has been on a hunger strike for days in protest of his detention, is reportedly suffering from serious health complications. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, recently disclosed that medical reports indicated signs of kidney damage, further escalating concerns about his well-being.

Besigye’s legal team has filed an urgent motion for his release, arguing that his continued incarceration without medical treatment violates his rights.

“The state is deliberately endangering his life. We are calling for an immediate court order to secure his freedom,” said his lawyer, Erias Lukwago.

Security forces have since tightened their grip around the court premises, anticipating further unrest. The court is set to reconvene shortly to hear the defense team’s plea, as tensions continue to mount over Besigye’s fate.
