President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and addressing economic concerns in Kanungu, as he continues his Parish Development Model (PDM) tour in the Kigezi Sub-region.
While addressing residents, Museveni highlighted the planned upgrade of key roads, including the Kanyatorongo-Bwindi-Kisoro Road and the Ishasha-Katunuru Road, which he said are vital for boosting tourism and economic development in the region. “We shall work on Kanyatorongo-Bwindi-Kisoro Road.
There are also two more roads in this region, including the Ishasha-Katunuru Road, which passes through the park, and we have it in our plans,” Museveni assured the gathering.
In addition to infrastructure development, the president acknowledged the contributions of local National Resistance Movement (NRM) cadres in maintaining party unity and supporting grassroots initiatives. He commended the pioneers of the Kanungu NRM Nyekundire ground for raising Shs500 million to further party development, noting their role in strengthening the NRM’s influence in Kanungu and the larger Kigezi region.

During the event, ICT Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi and State Minister for Privatization and Investment Evelyne Anite urged Museveni to urgently address the economic challenges faced by tea farmers in the region.
They pointed out the government’s unpaid dues to nursery tea bed operators and the declining prices of tea, which have affected many livelihoods. “You told us that you will come back to talk about tea issues because most of our people are tea farmers. The prices have dropped, and those who had nursery tea beds are still demanding payment from the government,” the ministers reminded the president.
Museveni’s visit to Kanungu comes as part of his broader PDM tour, which focuses on empowering communities through localized development efforts and reinforcing government support for key economic sectors.
