Uganda’s national football team, the Cranes, has clinched their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with two qualifying matches to spare, marking their eighth appearance in the prestigious tournament.

A thrilling victory by South Sudan over Congo sealed the Cranes’ path to the finals, setting the stage for a high-stakes clash against South Africa at Namboole Stadium that will determine Group K’s top position.

The Cranes’ qualification underscores their steady rise in African football, backed by strategic gameplay and timely victories. This achievement is a significant milestone for Ugandan fans who have rallied around the team since the 1978 tournament in Ghana, where the Cranes finished as runners-up.

With Uganda and South Africa both securing their spots in Côte d’Ivoire, Friday’s match will be more than just another qualifier—it will be a battle for dominance in Group K, showcasing the progress both teams have made.

Uganda’s journey to the 2025 AFCON was marked by consistency, accumulating 10 points in the qualifiers to ensure their position among the continent’s elite. The last victory, a critical turning point, came with South Sudan’s 3-2 win over Congo, mathematically eliminating Congo’s chances and propelling the Cranes into the final tournament.

Beyond bragging rights, the game offers Uganda a final chance to fine-tune their strategy as they face the formidable Bafana Bafana on home turf. With AFCON regulars like Morocco, Algeria, Senegal, DR Congo, and Egypt already qualified, Uganda joins an exclusive lineup, ready to represent East Africa in the tournament’s 35th edition.

The Cranes will aim to revive their 1978 momentum and bring the AFCON trophy closer to home, re-establishing Uganda as a powerhouse in African football and inspiring a new generation of fans and players alike.
