Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Congolese army have successfully apprehended Anywari AI Iraq, an explosives expert operating within the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Major Bilal Katamba, the public information officer for Operation Shuja, confirmed this breakthrough during a media briefing.
Anywari, alias AA, was a key figure in the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), specializing in improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and weaponry. The joint operation led to the recovery of crucial items, including an SMG rifle, ammunition, walkie-talkies, an RPG charger, and materials used in the manufacture of IEDs.
Moreover, the operation yielded a humanitarian outcome, with the rescue of four children and five women in the Ituri province of the DRC. These individuals, liberated from the clutches of insurgency, are currently receiving medical care before being transferred to safer facilities.
The successful capture of Anywari and the rescue of civilians mark a significant milestone in the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the region. It underscores the effectiveness of collaboration between the UPDF and the Congolese army in combating threats to peace and stability.
