The Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Children is advancing two key bills—the Food and Nutrition Bill and the Witness Protection Bill aimed at safeguarding children’s rights and welfare.
The Food and Nutrition Bill seeks to combat child hunger and malnutrition by enforcing accountability for those responsible for providing food. “The bill provides a jail sentence or fine for any responsible person who fails to provide food to children,” said Margaret Makhoha, Chairperson of the Forum.
The Witness Protection Bill aims to protect and empower individuals who testify against those committing crimes against children. “We are pushing for the Witness Protection Bill to give witnesses confidence and protection while giving evidence against persons who commit crimes against children,” Makhoha added.
These announcements were made during a preparatory meeting for the 3rd National Children’s Parliament, scheduled for June, where children and policymakers will discuss and advocate for children’s rights.
