Several international brands, including luxury fashion house Prada, have severed ties with South Korean superstar Kim Soo Hyun following controversy surrounding his past relationship with late actress Kim Sae-ron.
The fallout underscores the intense scrutiny faced by celebrities in South Korea’s high-stakes entertainment industry.
Kim, one of the most recognizable figures in Korean television and film, came under fire after a YouTube channel alleged that he had started a relationship with Kim Sae-ron when she was still a minor. The claims sparked a wave of online backlash, though Kim and his agency, Goldmedalist, denied the accusations, insisting their relationship began only when both were adults.
Despite these denials, brands have moved swiftly to distance themselves from Kim. Prada, which appointed him as a brand ambassador in December, confirmed that the partnership had been terminated. “It has been mutually decided to end the collaboration between Prada and Kim Soo Hyun,” the company told CNN in a statement.
Dinto, a global Korean cosmetics brand, also announced the end of its contract with Kim, citing the controversy as the reason. In an Instagram post, the company stated that fulfilling the existing agreement had become “unfeasible” after reviewing his agency’s statement.
Other South Korean brands have followed suit, with some removing Kim’s images from promotional materials, according to Chosun Ilbo. Before the scandal, Kim represented more than 10 brands, highlighting the immense financial impact of the controversy.
Kim Sae-ron, once a rising star in the Korean film industry, had been out of the public eye since 2022, when she was convicted of drunk driving. The incident led to widespread public condemnation and stalled her acting career. Tragically, she was found dead at home in February 2025. Authorities ruled out foul play, but the exact circumstances of her death remain under investigation.
Following her passing, Kim Sae-ron’s family has accused Kim Soo Hyun of making “false statements” and causing them “further distress.” In a statement to CNN, the family’s lawyers said they were considering legal action against him.
Her death has reignited discussions about the immense pressure placed on South Korean celebrities, as well as the severe consequences of public opinion turning against them. Similar debates arose following the deaths of other young Korean stars, including ASTRO member Moon Bin, actress and singer Sulli, and performer Goo Hara.
The entertainment industry in South Korea is known for its high expectations, with celebrities often facing intense scrutiny over their personal lives. Even minor missteps, such as smoking or drinking in public, can lead to significant backlash.
While Kim Soo Hyun has not been formally charged with any wrongdoing, the damage to his reputation has been swift and severe. The coming weeks will likely determine the long-term impact on his career and public standing.
