President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring "no more fighting" as a fundamental pillar of South Sudan’s national development. This pledge comes as the country intensifies efforts to stabilize conflict-prone regions and attract foreign investment, a strategy reinforced by Minister of Investment Dr. Dhieu Mathok. Dr. Mathok, speaking at Harvard University last year, emphasized the direct connection between lasting peace and sustainable economic growth. “Peace is not merely the absence of war—it is the foundation upon which prosperous economies are built. Investment thrives where stability exists, and stability is reinforced when communities see tangible benefits from development,” he said in his keynote address. These principles are now taking shape on the ground. Vice President for the Economic Cluster, Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, has led a major peace initiative in Upper Nile and Jonglei states, engaging White Army leaders, traditional authorities, and spiritual figures to de-escalate tensions in Nasir, Ulang, and Nyirol counties. Between February 23 and March 1, 2025, Dr. Bol Mel conducted intensive dialogues with local commissioners and White Army representatives, resulting in a crucial agreement allowing South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) troops to deploy via river transport. The breakthrough agreement ensures safe passage for SSPDF barges to Nasir County, marking a key step toward disarmament discussions once stability is secured. “Lasting peace is not negotiable—it is the bedrock of our nation’s future,” Dr. Bol Mel declared, aligning with President Kiir’s vision for a peaceful and prosperous South Sudan.
