Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has urged women leaders in Uganda to take a stand in safeguarding the rights of girls, emphasizing the need to eliminate harmful cultural practices, early marriages, female genital mutilation, and school dropouts.
She made these remarks while opening the 2nd Women’s Parliament, a crucial gathering focused on addressing challenges affecting women and girls.
While officiating the event, Speaker Among underscored the responsibility of women leaders in advocating for the welfare and safety of girls. She called for collective efforts to combat issues such as sexual violence and limited access to education, which continue to hinder the progress of young Ugandan girls.
Among also praised President Yoweri Museveni for spearheading economic empowerment programs that have improved the livelihoods of many women across the country. She noted that such initiatives have enhanced financial independence and social well-being, creating new opportunities for women to thrive.
The 2nd Women’s Parliament has drawn women leaders from all corners of Uganda, providing a platform to discuss key issues affecting women. The gathering serves as an avenue to share experiences, raise awareness, and advocate for progressive policies that promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
During her speech, Among reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to championing policies that uplift women and protect girls from harmful practices. She stressed that a united front among women leaders is essential in ensuring that young girls grow up in safe, supportive environments.
The discussions at the Women’s Parliament focus on solutions to persistent gender-related challenges, including increasing access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for women. Participants have also emphasized the importance of enforcing laws against gender-based violence and harmful cultural traditions.
Among reiterated that unity among women leaders is key to achieving lasting change. “We shall work together for the betterment of this country, without segregation,” she affirmed, calling on all stakeholders to prioritize the rights and well-being of women and girls.
The Women’s Parliament is expected to conclude with key resolutions that will be presented to the government for implementation, further strengthening policies that support women’s empowerment and gender equality in Uganda.
