Congolese musician Delcat Idengo, renowned for his politically charged songs, was shot and killed Thursday afternoon while filming a music video in Goma, North Kivu.
The artist, whose latest track condemned both the M23 rebels and ADF militants as forces of occupation, was attacked near Kilijiwe and died instantly from a gunshot wound to the head.
Delcat Idengo, known for his powerful voice against the political and military forces in his country, was gunned down in broad daylight while filming a music video in the conflict-ridden region of Goma.
The 33-year-old, whose real name was Delphin Katembo Vinyasiki, had just released a track denouncing the M23 rebels and ADF as occupying forces in the region.
Witnesses described Idengo as dressed in military fatigues for the shoot, adding to the intensity of the scene he was creating. However, tragedy struck as he was attacked near Kilijiwe, where a bullet struck him in the head, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The killing comes just days after Idengo’s release from Munzenze prison, located in an area controlled by the M23 forces, who are accused of backing the ongoing instability in the region.
His death has shocked many in North Kivu, where he was seen as a fearless critic of both the local government and the various militant groups terrorizing the region.
Idengo’s music had always been politically charged, and he had been arrested multiple times for his outspoken criticism of President Felix Tshisekedi’s government.
His songs, often condemning corruption and calling for justice, earned him both admiration and enemies.
The Congolese Ministry of Arts and Culture mourned his loss, calling him “a committed voice who carried the aspirations and hopes of an entire generation through his music.”
“Delcat Idengo was not only a musician but a symbol of resistance, a voice for the voiceless. His death is a tragic loss to the world of music and to the people of the DRC.”
The circumstances surrounding Idengo’s death have sparked a mixed reaction among activists. While many have condemned the brutal killing, some have criticized the artist’s actions as reckless.
“It is an absurd death because he could have avoided it with more caution. These rebels are cruel and must be punished, but let us remain wise in the face of weapons.”
Idengo’s death also occurs at a time of heightened tensions in Goma, where the M23 rebels have seized control of the city and established a new government.
The group, which has long been accused of receiving support from Rwanda, briefly captured Goma in 2012 before retreating under international pressure. Their return and the subsequent establishment of their control have led to an even more volatile situation in the region.
Idengo’s murder has ignited renewed calls for accountability and justice for the many victims of the ongoing conflict in the DRC.
