Makerere University celebrated its 75th graduation ceremony, awarding degrees and diplomas to 13,658 students in a colorful five-day event.
Makerere University, one of Africa’s leading institutions, honored the achievements of 13,658 graduates during its 75th graduation ceremony. The event showcased the university’s dedication to academic excellence and innovation.
Among the graduates, 143 earned PhDs, 1,813 received master’s degrees, and 11,454 completed bachelor’s degrees. Additionally, 243 postgraduate diplomas were awarded. Women made up 53% of the graduates, with 44% of PhD recipients being female.
Top performers were celebrated, including Enock Joel Mubiru, who graduated with a CGPA of 4.91 in his Bachelor of Science degree, and Abdul Latif Umar Bagoole, who achieved a CGPA of 4.97 in Bachelor of Leisure and Hospitality Management.
Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe praised the graduates for their hard work and highlighted key achievements of the university, such as new programs in early childhood education and the launch of a Competence-Based Curriculum Research project.
Prof. Nawangwe also emphasized Makerere’s efforts to support students through initiatives like the Student Work Scheme for financially challenged learners and the Disability Support Centre for inclusive education.
Encouraging graduates to focus on creating opportunities, he said, “If you cannot find employment, think about how you can use your skills to start something new.”
The event’s keynote speaker, Prof. Puleng LenkaBula, Vice Chancellor of the University of South Africa, called on graduates to contribute to Africa’s development and knowledge production.
The 75th graduation marked another milestone in Makerere University’s journey to becoming a leading research institution and a pillar of Uganda’s development.
