At least 35 children lost their lives in a tragic stampede during a school fair in Basorun, Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at Islamic High School, where thousands of families had gathered for an event organized by Women in Need of Guidance and Support, a local NGO. Several organizers, including the school principal and the NGO’s founder, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, have been arrested as part of an ongoing investigation.
The stampede reportedly began when food and gifts were being distributed, leading to chaos and a deadly crush. Six other individuals sustained injuries during the incident, according to police spokesperson Osifeso Adewale. State Governor Seyi Makinde described it as a “sad day,” while Nigerian President Bola Tinubu expressed profound grief and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
This tragic incident has sparked widespread mourning and calls for accountability. Prophetess Silekunola, a former queen of the Ooni of Ife, has been detained along with others linked to the event as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The scale of the disaster has highlighted safety concerns at large gatherings in the country.
Deadly stampedes have become a recurring issue in Nigeria. In March, similar tragedies occurred when two students died and 23 others were injured during a rice distribution event.
That same month, four people were killed in another stampede while attempting to collect cash aid intended to help alleviate hunger. These incidents point to a broader issue of mismanagement at public events, often exacerbated by economic hardship.
As the nation mourns the loss of young lives, there is growing pressure on event organizers and authorities to implement stricter safety measures to prevent future tragedies. Investigations into the Basorun stampede continue, with families and communities demanding justice for the victims.
