A manhunt is in progress in New York City after Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed in what authorities are calling a “targeted attack.” The incident occurred early Wednesday morning outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, just hours before Thompson was scheduled to speak at an investor conference.
The 56-year-old executive was shot in the back and leg around 6:45 a.m. EST (11:45 GMT) on a cold winter morning. Police believe the suspect, described as wearing a distinctive grey backpack, had been lying in wait before ambushing Thompson. The suspect fled the scene on an electric bike and was last seen riding through Central Park, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
Security footage obtained from a Starbucks near the crime scene shows the suspect purchasing an item shortly before the shooting. These images are expected to be analyzed using the NYPD’s facial recognition software to help identify the assailant. Investigators also recovered bullet casings from the scene, which are being processed for further leads.
The motive for the killing remains unclear, but police are treating the case as a deliberate and premeditated attack. Thompson, who lived in Minnesota, was one of the most prominent figures in the U.S. healthcare industry, heading the country’s largest private insurer. Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities, including professional or personal motives behind the crime.
