In a groundbreaking effort to strengthen local governance and boost service delivery, more than 1,000 local leaders from 10 districts have converged at the National Leadership Training Institute and Oliva Regional Tambo Leadership School in Kaweweta, Nakaseke district, for an 11-day intensive leadership cours

Local leaders from across Uganda are undergoing a significant transformation at a new training program aimed at enhancing their leadership capacities. Over 1,000 leaders from 10 districts have gathered at the National Leadership Training Institute and the Oliva Regional Tambo Leadership School in Kaweweta, Nakaseke district, for an 11-day leadership course organized by the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Local Government.

The course, running from August 26th to September 7th, 2024, is designed to empower these leaders with advanced skills to monitor government programs effectively and improve service delivery across their regions. The initiative is part of a broader effort to build stronger local governance structures that are capable of driving development and responding to community needs.

One of the program’s highlights was a keynote address by Major General David Kasura, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF). His speech focused on “turbocharging” the agriculture sector by enhancing production, productivity, and profitability, sparking enthusiasm among the participants. This comes at a time when agriculture remains a key pillar of Uganda’s economy, and improving its efficiency is seen as crucial for national development.

Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) and other leaders from districts such as Nakasongola, Gomba, Mbarara, Kalungu, and Mbarara City are actively participating in the training. This diverse group represents a significant cross-section of Uganda’s leadership, all of whom are eager to return to their districts with new insights and strategies to drive progress.

This leadership course is seen as a game-changer for local governance in Uganda, promising to equip leaders with the skills needed to oversee government programs more effectively and deliver better services to their communities. As the training progresses, there is growing optimism about the positive impact these empowered leaders will have on their districts.
