In a significant step towards enhancing ICT access in rural Uganda, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has welcomed a delegation led by Mr. Gao Hover, President of Huawei Sub-Saharan Africa, to discuss the establishment of a digital village prototype in Butaleja, aimed at boosting education and business processes.
This collaboration marks a pivotal move in bridging the digital divide in Uganda’s rural areas, leveraging global technology expertise to foster local development and innovation.
On the sidelines of the Kyankwanzi retreat, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni engaged in a crucial meeting with a delegation headed by Mr. Gao Hover, President of Huawei Sub-Saharan Africa. The focus of their discussion was the introduction of a digital village prototype in Butaleja, a project designed to enhance the uptake of ICT in rural communities, with particular emphasis on education and business processes.
President Museveni expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, recognizing its potential to transform the socio-economic landscape of Butaleja and similar regions. “This digital village prototype represents a significant leap towards integrating our rural areas into the digital economy. It will provide our people with the tools and knowledge needed to compete in a globalized world,” Museveni remarked.
The proposed digital village will feature state-of-the-art technology infrastructure, including high-speed internet connectivity, digital learning platforms for schools, and e-commerce solutions for local businesses. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure that rural areas are not left behind in Uganda’s digital transformation journey.
Mr. Gao Hover emphasized Huawei’s commitment to supporting Uganda’s development goals through technology. “We are honored to collaborate with the Ugandan government on this project. Our aim is to empower rural communities with the necessary ICT tools and skills, fostering innovation and improving livelihoods,” Gao stated.
The digital village prototype is expected to serve as a model for similar projects across Uganda, demonstrating the practical benefits of ICT in enhancing educational outcomes and economic activities in rural areas. By providing access to digital resources and training, the initiative aims to create new opportunities for students and entrepreneurs, thereby reducing the urban-rural divide.
