Hon. Lokeris Peter and Hon. Wamala Nambozo Florence, Ministers for Karamoja Affairs, kick-started efforts to fast-track development in the Karamoja Sub-region during their maiden visit.
They engaged stakeholders in Kotido district to address pressing issues and introduce transformational programs.
The ministers emphasized the need for collaboration among security forces and local leaders to maintain peace and security, discouraging retaliatory actions that perpetuate criminality. They pledged to focus on key areas like food security, water access, and education to drive progress.
The meeting highlighted the importance of swift implementation of the Karamoja Development Agency (KDA) initiatives to realize meaningful transformation. Security officials assured continued support to enhance safety measures, including disarmament efforts, while a local resident voluntarily surrendered a firearm as a sign of commitment to peace.
Brig Gen Felix Busizoori noted the relative peace in the sub-region, attributing it to community mobilization efforts and adherence to the Presidential Amnesty window. He emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation to further consolidate this peace dividend.
Senior Commissioner of Police Elias Kasirabo reaffirmed the commitment of law enforcement agencies to bridge security gaps. He outlined measures such as enhancing police services, including the use of canine units, and tightening control over livestock markets to combat theft and ensure safety.
The ministers reiterated their dedication to working closely with local leaders and communities to address the region’s challenges comprehensively. They emphasized the importance of inclusive development strategies that prioritize the needs of all residents, especially in remote areas.
As the meeting concluded, the ministers and stakeholders expressed optimism about the prospects for accelerated transformation in Karamoja. They pledged continued collaboration and action to drive progress and improve the livelihoods of the region’s inhabitants.
