On April 18, 2024, Kenya faced the tragic loss of one of its most esteemed military leaders, Chief General Francis Omondi Ogolla.

The Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) died in a helicopter crash at the Kaben-Cheptulel border between West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet counties while on an official tour aboard a Bell Huey II helicopter. His death marks the end of an illustrious career in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and leaves behind a profound impact on the nation’s military history.

Born in Kenya, General Ogolla’s journey in the military began when he joined the Kenya Defence Forces on April 24, 1984. Displaying leadership potential and a dedication to service, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on May 6, 1985, and posted to the Kenya Air Force. His career quickly flourished as he honed his skills and knowledge in various capacities within the KDF.

General Ogolla pursued advanced education to further his expertise in military strategy and leadership. He attended the prestigious École Militaire de Paris, a renowned military school in France, where he gained international perspectives on defense and security matters. He also studied at the National Defence College of Kenya, reinforcing his commitment to excellence and continuous learning.

Ogolla’s rise through the ranks of the Kenya Defence Forces culminated in his appointment as Chief of Defense Forces in 2023. Appointed by Commander-in-Chief President William Ruto, General Ogolla succeeded General Robert Kibochi and assumed leadership with a vision for strengthening the country’s military capabilities and upholding national security.

His passion for service and his dedication to the welfare of his troops. He was a respected figure among his peers and subordinates, admired for his strategic insight and compassionate approach to leadership. His service was characterized by a commitment to integrity, discipline, and excellence.

The tragic helicopter crash on April 18, 2024, abruptly ended the life of a dedicated military leader. The accident occurred while General Ogolla was on a tour in West Pokot County, highlighting his active involvement in the field and his dedication to understanding the needs of different regions

Chief General Francis Omondi Ogolla’s legacy will be remembered for his contributions to the Kenya Defence Forces and his impact on the country’s military capabilities. His unwavering commitment to his duties and his pursuit of excellence will continue to inspire future generations of military leaders in Kenya.

Kenya mourns the loss of a dedicated and distinguished military leader whose life was devoted to the service of his country. As the nation pays tribute to his memory, General Ogolla’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those he served and led.
