Government of Uganda confirms plan to upgrade Gulu Airport to International standard in preparation to host Chan and Afcon 2027
last during a parliamentary session, the Member of Parliament for Bardege-Layibi Constituency, Hon. Ojara Martin Mapenduzi raised a matter in regards to government readiness to host CHAN and AFCON.
He continued to agitate that Gulu Airport should be upgraded in order to ease the entry and exit of players, fans and football officials during the two Africa’s famous games. Hon. Mapenduzi said since Gulu is very close to Lira that will be hosting 2024 CHAN and 2027 AFCON matches, therefore Gulu Airport and other amenities should also be key areas of interest as far as preparation for these games is concerned.
In response, Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala confirmed that Gulu Airport is set for major upgrade. Gulu Airport is both civilian and military airport in Northern region, which is a designated entry and exit point in and out of the country.
Gulu city is situated in Acholi sub region which has fertile arable land for commercial agriculture, upgrading the airport would also help a lot in transporting different farm’s products to international
