The Electoral Commission of Uganda has unveiled the comprehensive program for the upcoming by-elections in Dokolo District, addressing the vacancies for the District Woman Representative to Parliament and various Local Government Councilors.
The electoral process will kick off with the National Voters’ Register update, scheduled from Monday, 12th to Thursday, 15th February 2024. Citizens in Dokolo District can visit update stations across the seventy-one parishes/wards during this period to ensure their voter information is current and accurate.
A significant highlight is the cut-off date set by the Commission for voter registration and transfer of voting locations within the district, which is Thursday, 15th February 2024. It is imperative for eligible individuals to complete their registration or voting location transfer by this date, as no further registrations or transfers will be accepted after this point.
Following the update, a ten-day period for the display of the Voters’ Register will commence from Wednesday, 21st February to Friday, 1st March 2024. This will take place at all one hundred and seventy-three polling stations in Dokolo District, providing citizens with an opportunity to verify their details and ensure an accurate representation.
The Display of Parish Tribunal Recommendations, crucial for maintaining the integrity of the Register, is set for six days, running from Friday, 1st March to Wednesday, 6th March 2024, at the respective Parish/Ward Headquarters.
Nomination of candidates will be conducted on Monday, 11th, and Tuesday, 12th March 2024, at the Office of the District Returning Officer in Dokolo. Successfully nominated candidates will then embark on a seven-day campaign period, from Wednesday, 13th to Tuesday, 19th March 2024.
The polling and tallying of results for councilors representing Special Interest Groups are scheduled for Monday, 18th March 2024. Simultaneously, the main polling day for the District Woman Representative to Parliament and other Local Government Councillors will take place on Thursday, 21st March 2024.
This series of by-elections in Dokolo District is necessitated by the unfortunate passing of the former District Woman Representative, Hon. Cecilia Barbara Atim Ogwal, on 18th January 2024. The Electoral Commission underscores the significance of citizen participation in these democratic processes, urging all eligible voters in Dokolo District to actively engage in the upcoming by-elections.
