Renowned media personality and comedian Nicholas Mpirwe, popularly known as Messe Bontwe, has passed away.
The former member of the iconic comedy group Amarula Family was pronounced dead on Thursday, December 12, 2024, in California, United States. His death, confirmed on the same day, has sent shockwaves through the entertainment community. While the cause of death remains undisclosed at press time, fans and fellow entertainers are mourning the loss of a beloved figure in Uganda’s comedy scene.
Messe Bontwe gained widespread recognition in the early 2000s as part of Amarula Family, alongside notable figures such as Allan Mujuni (Amooti Omubalanguzi), Paddy ‘Bitama’ Ssali, and Daniel Kanyerezi (Irish Kyebandula).
The comedy group became a household name, particularly known for their popular skit “Side Mirror” which aired on WBS Television. The show, a satirical commentary on Uganda’s social and political issues, was immensely popular, becoming one of the most watched local television programs.
In addition to his comedy career, Messe also worked as a radio presenter, serving at Dembe FM and later at Super FM, owned by Peter Ssematimba, where he concluded his radio career in Uganda. Despite stepping away from comedy in 2021, citing his advancing age, Messe remained a cherished figure in Ugandan entertainment.
His passing has left a void in the comedy community. Following his death, his family is in the process of organizing to repatriate his body for burial, with the date to be announced soon.
The legacy of Messe Bontwe, a trailblazer in Uganda’s comedy landscape, will undoubtedly be remembered by all who knew and loved him.
