Uganda Christian University (UCU) has introduced new blue-themed graduation gowns, replacing the traditional black robes, in a move to distinguish its graduates from those of lower educational institutions. The announcement comes ahead of the second edition of UCU’s 25th graduation, set for this Friday.
Uganda Christian University (UCU) has unveiled new blue-themed graduation gowns, officially retiring the traditional black robes. The vibrant gowns will be worn for the first time this Friday by over 1,000 students at the university’s Mukono campus, as part of UCU’s second edition of its 25th graduation celebration.
During the unveiling ceremony, Rev. Dr. Assoc. Prof. John Kitayimbwa, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academics, emphasized the shift as part of UCU’s broader vision to modernize and distinguish its academic identity. He criticized the overuse of black gowns across various educational levels, including kindergarten, describing it as a dilution of the symbolism that university graduations should carry.
“Graduation is a unique achievement for those who dedicate years of study to a specific discipline. It’s inappropriate for a university graduate to wear the same gown as someone graduating from kindergarten. In Uganda, the black gown has become the most misused symbol of education,” Dr. Kitayimbwa explained.
The new gowns feature a dominant blue color, with faculty-specific variations, and will remain affordable as the prices have been maintained despite the redesign. The new attire symbolizes UCU’s commitment to elevating the graduation experience while ensuring the uniqueness of higher education remains intact.
Agira Birungi, the UCU Guild President, hailed the move as a forward-thinking decision that restores the dignity of university graduations. “This decision reflects the thoughtfulness of the university’s administration and is timely. I believe other institutions may soon follow this example.”
Adding to the voices of praise was Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, who is also a proud alumnus of UCU expressed his excitement over the new gowns and congratulated the university on its innovation.
“I am proud to see my Alma Mater, UCU, unveil these stunning new gowns for Friday’s graduation! This great innovation makes the university indeed a center of excellence in the heart of Africa. I thank the university administration and offer my heartfelt congratulations to our graduates!” said the Archbishop.
As UCU prepares for its upcoming graduation, the unveiling of the new gowns has already sparked interest and admiration across Uganda’s academic institutions, positioning UCU as a leader in redefining graduation traditions in the country.
