Uganda’s Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, met with the Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Uganda, Sanusi Tejano, to discuss the country’s humanitarian efforts, particularly its progressive refugee policy and broader migration challenges.
During the meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Kampala, discussions focused on Uganda’s open-door policy for refugees, efforts to restore the environment, and establishing structured refugee settlements.
Additionally, they addressed critical issues concerning migrant workers, youth employment, and the externalization of labor, ensuring that migration is dignified and respects human rights.
Sanusi Tejano was joined by IOM Regional Director Frantz Celestine and Sarah Karl, Head of Programmes for IOM Uganda. They highlighted IOM’s mission to protect the dignity and rights of all migrants, especially addressing inequalities faced by marginalized groups based on sex, gender, age, race, and disability.
The meeting reinforces Uganda’s global standing as a leader in refugee protection, while also addressing the nation’s internal challenges linked to migration, employment, and environmental sustainability.
