The Parliament of Uganda has dismissed recent statements made by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba on his personal social media as his individual opinion, not an official government stance.
This comes after concerns from MPs who argued that his comments on governance might contravene the Constitution.
The Cheif of Defence Force Uganda Peoples Defence Force [UPDF] Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who has frequently taken to his personal X (formerly Twitter) social media account to share his thoughts on Uganda’s governance, has sparked debate among lawmakers who believe his actions may violate constitutional boundaries.
During a heated parliamentary session chaired by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, some members of Parliament expressed concerns that Gen. Muhoozi’s public commentary may undermine the integrity of Uganda’s Constitution. His remarks have been seen by some as laying the groundwork for a potential 2026 presidential bid, a move that has stirred political debate within both the government and public spheres.
A section of MPs urged the House to address the matter formally, with concerns raised about the implications of a senior military figure using social media to shape political discourse. However, Tayebwa advised that the issue should be referred to the Ministry of Defence and Internal Affairs to determine whether any laws have been breached.
“His statements reflect his individual opinion, not that of the Commander of Defence Forces or the government,” Tayebwa said, seeking to clarify the separation between personal views and official policy.
For several days, Gen. Muhoozi has used his X handle to express views on governance, which some perceive as outlining his presidential aspirations for 2026. This has attracted significant political backing, including the creation of a formal organization known as the Patriotic League of Uganda, which aims to rally support for his potential candidacy.
Muhoozi’s growing influence and use of social media for political commentary have raised questions about the role of military figures in Uganda’s political arena. While he enjoys substantial backing from a section of the public and government officials, concerns over constitutional integrity and military neutrality continue to loom large in political circles.
As the debate unfolds, Uganda faces the challenge of balancing personal freedoms with the legal frameworks that govern political expression, particularly for military officers. Whether Muhoozi’s political ambitions will gain further traction remains to be seen, but his continued presence in the public eye is already reshaping Uganda’s political discourse.
